The Classical Music Archives - an excellent place to start
Even though the site looks like it hasn't had a design chance since 1999, the Classical Music Archives is still a premier classical music site and well worth browsing when you have the time.
I've used it for research purposes and to find various catalog numbers for pieces I was interested in. You can search for composers alphabetically or by style period.
The site also lists mp3 and wav audio for listening as well as midi versions of famous public domain pieces.
